What's A HBCU?
Historical black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before 1964 with the intention of serving the black community.
The schools received the designation because they provided Blacks an opportunity for a higher education when white universities historically and systematically denied Blacks admission. As of 2016, there were 105 HBCUs in the United States including public and private, two-year and four-year, medical schools, and community colleges.
Most of the HBCUs are located in the confederate States that existed prior to the Civil War, except for Wilberforce (OH), Cheyney University (PA), Lincoln University (PA), Central State University (OH), and Lewis College of Business (MI). Cheyney, Lincoln, and Wilberforce opened prior to the Civil War.
Of the 105 HBCUs, 27 offer doctoral programs and 52 provide graduate degree programs at the Master's level. At the undergraduate level, 83 of the HBCUs offer a Bachelor's degree program and 38 of these schools offer
associate degrees.
Over the years, the student population at many of the
institutions have been experiencing significant diversity.
Bluefield State College and West Virginia State

greater than 70 percent.
